Academic and professional trajectory

Professor of Management in the Department of Business at the University of Vigo, a position he has held since 14/12/2017. He holds a European Doctorate from the University of Vigo (School of Economics and Business, 10/05/2002), trained in the ETIC Doctoral Programme (Economics of Technological and Institutional Change) at MERIT (Maastricht University, Netherlands) and BETA (University of Strasbourg, France) during 1998-99; he graduated in Business from the University of Santiago de Compostela (1994). His career at the University of Vigo includes periods as Research Assistant at USC (1995-1998), Assistant Professor (1998-2009) and Associate Professor (2007-2017, including Visiting Fellow stays at Universidad Carlos III in 2011 and Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 2014-2015). He has also carried out research stays at Århus Business School (Denmark), UNISINOS (São Leopoldo, Brazil), ISCTE (Lisbon, Portugal) and CRIC-University of Manchester (UK, 2009-2010). He is a permanent researcher affiliated with the interuniversity research centre ECOBAS. He was a Counsellor of the Economic and Social Council of Galicia (2007-2018) and Chief Editor of BRQ Business Research Quarterly (2014-2018). He currently sits on the External Advisory Committee of CEGE, the research centre of Católica Porto Business School (Universidade Católica Portuguesa), takes part in the economics/business management evaluation teams of the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI), and serves as President of the Spanish Academy of Management (ACEDE) until June 2026.

Research topics and main scientific contributions

His research examines how firms and institutions respond to major challenges — such as sustainability transitions, regional resilience, and technological disruption — by rethinking their strategy, structure, and capacity for innovation. He has published in leading journals across organisation (Organization Science, Organization Studies, Group & Organization Management), operations and engineering (Journal of Operations Management, Computers & Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management), strategy and innovation (Research Policy, Long Range Planning, Strategic Change), and practitioner- and policy-oriented outlets (Harvard Business Review, Regional Studies, Climate Policy).

Transfer activities

His CVA lists 17 transfer contracts and assignments on which he was the responsible researcher, between 2010 and 2025, with public and private institutions. Recent examples include: an argumentative report supporting the Port Authority of Vigo’s candidacy for the TEN-T network (2025); “Galician Citizenship and the Circular Economy” for the Economic and Social Council of Galicia (2024); a study of the impact of climate change on the Galician coast for the Regional Ministry of the Environment (2022); a technological characterisation of SMEs and self-employed workers for the Galician Technological Institute (2024); and “Galicia 2030: from digitization 4.0 to Society 5.0” (2021-2022). He also directed, continuously from 2018 to 2025, the ARDÁN Chair (Consorcio Zona Franca de Vigo), responsible for maintaining and redesigning the InnoBench platform, the report on the state of business innovation in Galicia, and the design of a methodology for identifying Smart Companies. He has also collaborated with companies such as Jealsa Rianxeira, Syngenta, Aaccentia and ASM Soft, and with institutions such as the Economic and Social Council of Galicia, IGAPE and Fundación Provigo.

Other merits of interest

He was a Counsellor of the Economic and Social Council of Galicia (2007-2018). His research work has involved collaborations with institutions such as the Inter-American Development Bank, several departments of the Galician Government, Consorcio Zona Franca de Vigo and the Port Authority of Vigo, as well as with companies in the food, apparel, pharmaceutical, software and automotive sectors — including Altran, Jealsa, Pescanova, Stellantis and Syngenta — and technology centres such as TECNALIA and CETMAR. He has presented his work at conferences such as AoM, BAM, EAEPE, EGOS, EURAM, EUROMA and ACEDE, and has been invited to discuss his research at universities including Pompeu Fabra, Copenhagen Business School, CUNEF, Carlos III, the Public University of Navarre, the Menéndez Pelayo International University, Salamanca, Valencia, A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Zaragoza, Jaume I, La Rioja, Sevilla and Valladolid.
