Coral Del Río Otero
Coral del Río Otero holds a degree in Economics from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (1989) and a PhD in Economics from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (1996). Her doctoral thesis, entitled “Inequality and Poverty in Spain, from 1980-81 to 1990-91”, was supervised by Prof. Javier Ruiz-Castillo Ucelay.
She has been Full Professor at the Universidade de Vigo since 2012. She has undertaken postdoctoral research stays abroad, specifically at the University of Massachusetts — Amherst (USA, 2018) and Portland State University (USA, 2012).
She has extensive experience in university management, notably as Head of the Department of Applied Economics (2022-2025), Director of the Equality Office of the Universidade de Vigo (2006-2008) and Vice-Dean for Financial Affairs of the Faculty of Economics and Business (1997-2000).
Her work focuses primarily on the study of economic inequalities, the economics of inequality, poverty analysis and the interactions between economics and gender.
She has made significant methodological advances and produced empirical studies for the distributive analysis of the labour market, investigating phenomena such as unemployment, wage discrimination and occupational segregation by sex, race, class, migration status and sexual orientation.

She led, as PI, the “Diagnostic report on poverty and social exclusion in Galicia” for the Regional Vice-Presidency for Equality and Welfare of the Xunta de Galicia (2006).
She directed, as PI, the contract “Distributive aspects of gender-based wage discrimination in Spain, 1995-2002” for the Institute for Fiscal Studies of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Finance (2006-2007).
She has a high-impact scientific output of more than 60 publications, including 45 articles in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR).
The quality of her academic output has been positively assessed with 4 six-year research assessment periods (sexenios) awarded by CNEAI (1996-2019) and 7 five-year teaching assessment periods covering 1989-2024.
