The LitterDrone project, with the participation of ECOBAS researchers, wins the Galicia Award of Communications

The Official School and the Association of Telecommunications Engineers of Galicia chose last week the Galicia Awards of Communications 2018, being awarded as the Best ICT Project with Social Benefits the LitterDrone project (Development and Exploitation of Innovative Tools for Remote Marine Litter Control and Management through UAVs), led by the GPI Group of the University of Vigo and in which participates the iMark Group. The members of the jury highlight their quality and degree of technological innovation, through the use of open systems and effective participation of agents involved in the field of environmental sustainability.

This project, which started in 2017 and will end in early 2019, is funded by the Blue Labs Program: innovative solutions for maritime challenges, of the EASME (Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises). Its objective is to develop a pilot system to characterize marine litter on European coasts by using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), equipped with high-resolution cameras. The images registered by these devices will be processed by specialized software to characterize the objects found in the samplings, characterization that will serve to implement prevention and mitigation measures.

The awards ceremony will take place next June 1 at the Hotel Pazo Los Escudos, in Vigo.
