ECOBAS Research Seminar: Jordi Brandts - Barcelona School Of Economics

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of gender differences in performance caused by two different dimensions of competition –rivalry for resources and status ranking. It also examines two mechanisms behind such differences: (1) gendered beliefs about performance differences in competitiveness; and (2) prescriptive stereotypes about women having to show warmth towards others. The results indicate that in the absence of any competitive dimension men and women perform equally well. Any competitive dimension, however, leads to women doing worse than men. These results are explained by men’s beliefs that they are better than women, and by women’s adherence to a prescribed stereotype of not harming others. Gender differences under competition seem to be endogenous to situational contexts, just like they are without competition.

Doctoral Seminar: Rolando Miguel Melo Vaz (University of Vigo)

The purpose of the seminar is twofold. First, we review, in a unified and critical way, those factors and strategies that promote and explain the growth of firms put forward by the empirical literature. Second, we present two empirical research that studies the impact of a number of factors for firms' growth (age, size, financial funding and location) in two strategic sectors for the Portuguese economy: Portuguese Footwear Industry and Portuguese Textile and Clothing Industry.

The doctoral seminars are given by Junior Researchers who obtained their doctoral degree less than two years ago or by predoctoral researchers who are currently developing their thesis project.

"Public space and social innovation. The case of Quito (ECUADOR)".
The concept of public space implemented by the administration Municipio Distrito Metropolitano Quito (MDMQ), 2009-2014, as a source of social capital and territorial cohesion is analyzed, proving that this concept is understood in a broader way than it is used in the tradition of urbanism. This concept includes a series of perspectives that enrich its meaning: a traditional perspective, a dynamic perspective, an environmental perspective and a social perspective. Complementarily, its introduction in local administration has been endowed with its own budget programs, thus ensuring the sustainability of a communal policy for public space. As it is presented in the MDMQ vision, public space is an instrument of sectoral coordination, whose interpretation as a cross-cutting program constitutes a novelty in the discourse of existing scientific studies, since it presents concrete and visible experiences of its use to foster territorial cohesion. Moreover, it is an instrument for ex post evaluations of municipal network projects, for bringing the discussion on territorial cohesion to a tangible level for the population and local administration and for discussing a territorial perspective of social capital.
